Question about dc++ encoding/decoding fonts

Post by BBB ViPer » 2003-10-03 21:02

My question is does dc++ support the unicode encoding/decoding in one/all it/its fonts, or is the ansi encoding/decoding the only one supported???

Why i ask is because i make ascii art and want to implement it to the dc world to make the onjoin mess look better and make the hub more scen orientated.

My problem is that the only font (at the moment that i konw of)that works too show the ascii (in dc++) in it´s real form is the "Terminal" font, but the problem with this font is that it doesn´t support these characters "Å/å" , "Ä/ä" and "Ö/ö". Another font that works too do ascii with is the "Lucida Console" font, but to be able to show the extra symbols that one uses to make ascii art with, requiers unicode encoding/decoding support. Is it possible to add this support in any way?

create your ascii art for Arial 8, it should look ok in default DC++ fonts setting.
most ascii art you will finds on internet will be Arial 10.

FYI, Arial is a variable width font. ASCII art should be done with a fixed width font.

However, I don't think that's what the original poster was wondering about.

Having read the post again though, I'm unsure as to what the query is about. Are you asking about just display? If so, I think that's entirely in the hands of the end user. ie. whatever font they decide to use.

Or perhaps you are talking about data transfer, as in, is the text transmitted as unicode text. For this, I am not sure.

I started off the post with a clear idea in my head but seem to have trailed off into vagueness. Oh well.

1) ASCII Art must be done with a fixed width font
2)I know it´s up to the end user to choose the right font so he get´s the proper display, but when i test the ascii to see if it displays right i don´t get the extra symbols to show right, these symbols get repalced with other symbols that make the ascii to look like shit.

A strange thing is that when i copy the ascii into the box where u write ur message it looks ok, but when i hit enter and send the ascii as a mess it shows in the chat window with replaced symbols. I think that it is the unicode symbols that gets replaced with ansi symbols and as they arent the same the ascii doesn´t look right.

Can the makers of dc++ add this unicode support to the fonts or colud i do something to get it to work properly?

i don't know the difference between ansi and unicode.
but i know that if you want your ascii art to look at their best for the majority of DC user you must use Arial 8.
if the caracter you wich to use is not in Arial set then your out of luck.
there was a feature request for truth graphic (or unicode ?) in main chat not long ago, i didnt check to see if it made it to the SF feature tracker tho.

the differens between ansi and unicode is the character set.
i want to be able to use the unicode characters in the "Lucida Console" font but i cant, and that is why i asked if dc++ only supports the ansi encoding/decoding?
i also wonder if there is a way to add this support either with a 3rd party addon or that u guys who make dc++ add support for the unicode encoding/decoding??

As far as I can tell from a quick scan through the threads listed below, DC++ doesn't support Unicode. But a lot of people see the benefits of it. I think a stumbling block may be interoperability with other non-unicode clients as well as hubs.

You might want to look through these threads. See if you find anything useful.

thx for the links there was alot of info there but i still wonder if it possible to add this unicode support???

In the network of hubs i run in we only accept dc++ and oDc users so this wouldn´t be a problem of displaying the same thing to everyone, and futher more i would recommend a font to se the ascii in it´s best, so i don´t think there is a problem there.
