Updating to new versions

Hi, a would like to see some changes in the NSIS script so that I don't have to install unessacary files every time I update dc++.

E.g. I would like
checkbox: DC++ Executable

as an option.

Or if dc++ could update itself somehow like smartftp for instance that would be great to

When I update my dc++ (every new version) I install "DC++ (required)" to my desktop and then drag the executable to my dc++ folder and remove the installed folder.
I know my way around the files, and I know that I only want the executable copied to my dc++ folder.
To avoid newbie missunderstandings the executable checkboxe should be automatically enabled and "grayed out" whenever the "DC++ (required)" checkbox is enabled.

not to mention the .pdb and dbghelp.dll
if your client ever crashes, it's nice to have some info so you can help prevent the problem

So if I just install all the stuff from the package to my dc++ folder I won't have problems with loosing data such as my settings, notes and files halfway down?

The DC++ package doesn't include queue file, nor setting file. The EXE creates them on first start if they do not exist. The only issue in losing settings/queue is when changing the way DC++ handles them, wich would be stated in the changelog.txt (the most usefull file when it comes to upgrading, IMO).

Anyway, backing up your .xml files before upgrading is safe and easy (never done it though :wink:

yep but the changlog isn't revealed until after installation

, so to be on the safe side I have to keep my current procedure or start backing up my xml files

The DC++ installer did once clobber your XML file, but it was fixed (see changelog). If you look at the changelog.txt before you run the client, you'll be fine. And

THe faster and simpleway to upgrade to new versions is to get just the DCPlusPlus.exe zipped in an handly file.

by this also download time is shorter.

We keep our download section updated with the last official DC++ EXE file.

So you have outdated readme.txt and changelog.txt, wich is not so handy. Those files help users to solve problems by themselves.

Please, just use the installer or the ZIP from the main sourceforge page, if you don't already. The PDB is invaluable should someone encounter a bug in DC++ and want to report it (and have that acted on). And if someone doesn't have the latest dbghelp.dll (also in the ZIP/Installer), DC++ will give them an error.

Sure, it adds a megabyte and a half to the file size, but if that will give you bandwidth woes, just link to the main sourceforge site.
