Only a few seconds of downloaded files work.

I've been downloading some video media (anime for all you dirty thinkers) and only the first 4-10 seconds work. After this DivX acts as though the file is finished playing even though the counter at the bottom says that there is more file to play. Could I just have extremely bad luck and am getting all corrupted files? Does this sound like a problem with my computer? I'm running an archaic Win ME computer for the moment while my main comp is in ICU. This was a problem i came across from time to time on my new computer but it wasn't as widespread (i've had this problem on the past 15 animes, which is also every file i've tried to download with this computer.) Thanks for the read and hopefully someone out there will know what's going on.
