BitTorrent Protocol

I know this will probably never happen but I thought I'd bring it up for discussion. This would involve such a thorough changing of the Direct Connect protocol that it would most likely result in a whole new network. Currently websites host .torrent files for BitTorrent downloads, but what if a new program were made enabling people to connect to hubs to download using BitTorrent protocol. What are the pros and cons of this, and does it already exist?
