Cutoff-->error: file not found

Rollback inconsistency----> I used cutoff to cutoff some KB but cutoff keeps giving me an error --->file not found [I closed all programs that could possibly use the file and the file-sizes are all under 1GB.]

further info: I do not use a firewall, but i have a router and forwarded a port for dc++, version. used 0.401 (stable version) and 0.403 (unstable but same problem)

You can find and try a hex editor instead of cutoff. It's not our program, so we don't know every way it can fail. It's just a handy tool.

A hex-editor gives me also problems--> I understand you can't help me with the hex-editor.

Is there not a simple reason which i didn't come up with why the cutoff program keeps giving the error "file not found" (while the file is really there?)

It would help me a lot using the simple cutoff program instead of learning exactly how the hex editor works with the errors its giving.

I found out what the problem is with the "file not found"- error in cutoff. It was not the size of the file nor other programs using the file, but the problem is the number of submaps where the file is in eg.

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Bureaublad\The Stepford Wives 2004yqoomgnv.avi -----------------------------> this is the number of submaps when i get no error

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Bureaublad\DC ++ shared folder\Unfinished\The Stepford Wives 2004yqoomgnv.avi ------------------------------> and with this number of submaps i get the "file not found" error

Probably will "Cutoff" NOT recognize a file when it is in five submaps or more and probably it WILL recognize the file when it's in three submaps or less.

Hope this will help a few people who will have the same problem with Cutoff :wink:

It is not the number of directories but the length of the pathname. DOS had a limit on the length of a file pathname. I don't recall how many characters that limit was, but apparently it still exists in Windows.

Indeed you are right! It has nothing to do with the number of submaps....... :oops:

number of characters can't be more than 260!

I think it would be more likely to be 255 (2^8 = 256, the number of states a byte can be in, plus you need a null character at the end of the string).

Don't blame me, blame microsoft for the windowscreen that told it could not be longer than 260 characters.......but whatever, who cares?

I can give it a try.... ..... You talked about a character limit, if u use winrar and want to extract a packed file to a map with a pathname longer than 260 characters you will get this errormessage !

You gave a comment about DOS having a limit on the length of a file pathname, i think that must be the reason for this error-message in winrar and probably the reason why Cutoff gave the error-message "file not found". So thats why i thought and said the limit must be 260 characters, but I can be wrong.............

I got another "file not found" error with cutoff today. This was the file pathname C:\Documents and Settings\user\Bureaublad\Van.Helsing.AC3.Xvid.Telecine.DVD-R[bekarar]bpgqauuu.avi
It does not look at all like this are 260 characters....so the limit on characters with cutoff is different than the limit on characters with winrar.

When I moved the file to this file pathname C:\Van.Helsing.AC3.Xvid.Telecine.DVD-R[bekarar]bpgqauuu.avi cutoff did not gave me the "file not found" error

i got another error message wich stated that the limit was 95 characters, looks a lot more like the "real" limit.............

By simple test I found CutOff's path limit to be 93 chars .

A bit off-topic, but a tip until next time CutOff.exe won't do the job:

Use HJSplit.

First it might be a good idea to set the priority on the file in question to Paused in the DC++ Queue.

Open HJSplit and click the Split button.

Click on Input File and open the file in question, let's say it's called file.ext and is 427 MiB.

Split it to 400 Mbytes.

When HJSplit is done splitting, you'll have a 400 MiB file.ext.001 and a 27 MiB file.ext.002.

Delete file.ext and file.ext.002.

Rename file.ext.001 to file.ext.

Set the priority back to Normal in the DC++ Queue and Re-add source, then check if it resumes.

If it does, great!

If not, try splitting to a smaller size.

I hope someone finds this tip useful :wink:
