Feature request for dc++ .401

Post by gopherbroke » 2004-05-09 17:00

I would like if ver.401 had a client detect feature by default. It seems to me that .401 is the most stable and best version but lacks that one feature. The other op clients seem to be trying to do too much, and have many features that I simply don't want. I am not a programmer, but if this project was fairly simple I would be happy to attempt it myself...if others in the dc community would lend a hand. Thanks!

won't happen
read up on the ClientVersion thread.. it speaks about why client types and versions are not interesting/important, while features are (read: _features_ not _quirks_)
furthermore, you may think that the features you want are simple. but they require not only quite a bit of work (implementing all kinds of checks along every protocol negotiation, extremely bloating the application), they also need lots of maintainance (adding the peculiarities of different versions of different apps when they come out)

if the client tag does not provide version info (by means of the tag in the description), the client does not want to be detected. if the mod programmers are too stupid to implement dc++-like behaviour correctly when claiming they are dc++ (for instance) that's just sad, but not something you should rely on.

Well...thanks for the reply. I seem to have dived in over my head here, per usual. So my understanding of the ClientVersion thread is that it is simply not worth implementing because the unsavory clients simplly fake out their version? I have tested out IDC and it is bloated and crashes on me...but it picks up Stealth and Hacked DC clients. Excuse my lack of understanding here....I guess in my mind I would like to have a stable base DC++ client for op's that has the ability to add the features the user wants. Like a plug in system I guess.

Look into DC++k. The entire point of most of its mods are to sniff out the variety of fakers. Note that development stopped at the .251 branch, so it might be somewhat outdated. You'll have to read the changelog or email the creator to figure out how to use them.

Use DC++k CDM or DCDM++ instead of the outdated DC++k the DC++k CDM is based on an older version of DC++k because of stability reasons, but has now elvolved past DC++k. DCDM++ is a BCDC++ based CDM and has a user customiceable clien profile. Both are avaible at http://dialspace.dial.pipex.com/town/pi ... spluskcdm/ and has their forum at http://www.imperialnet.org/forum/index.php (in ther bottom)

Sorry, but this isn't an interesting feature in DC++.

CDMs are fundamentally flawed because they try to observe identifying marks, and don't truly measure or observe behaviors. People tend to classify everything they haven't seen before (such as CVS builds of DC++) as "bad" clients, and ban on site. This is retarded.
