Websites pop up on some mpeg files, how do I stop them?

On some Mpeg files, websites start popping up...

My firewall blocks this, so it's not that a big problem, but I would like to know why these websites are popping up, and how to stop them....

Sounds like you have some adware/spyware installed. Have you ran Adaware 6 or SpyBot Search and Destroy lately?

I think that they have somehow done something to the file..., this only happends to some files, not every file

Are you sure its not .ASF files that cause a webpage to pop up? I think that feature was built into asf a while ago. I don't think there's a way around it.

I know the difference between .asf and mpeg, so I'm pretty sure that it is a mpeg.....

Are you sure it's not an ASF renamed with an mpeg extension? :mrgreen:

Seriously, I've never seen this with MPEG files, but I have seen it with ASF files - it's why I avoid them like the plague in fact.

Media Player Classic (which is not the same as MS Media Player 6.4.x) can tell you what filter is used to decode a file, perhaps that'd be of use to you. Or not.

I went ahead and found an .ASF file and renamed it to .MPEG. Windows Media Player 9 played the "mpeg" without bothering to mention that it began its life as an .ASF.

I couldn't find an .ASF file that triggers an IE window, however. So I couldn't test renaming in that respect.

hmm, btw, should I delete the "mpgeg"'s after I discover the popups?, that's what I've been doing, don't want to risk any viruses or something.... I guess what I'm asking, does these files pose any treath to my system?

Another easy solution is to download rar-pr0n instead as i suspect thats the kind of movie you are trying to watch. Windows MediaPlayer has always been filled with security-holes due to its "interaction" with other programs. (As winamp behaved with its browser which also opened file etc..)

Are you saying you weren't watching porn? For instance, I have a hard time seeing Tom's Hardware embedding a web link in their movies of an Athlon setting itself on fire after removing the heatsink. Or Nvidia inserting a website into its guided tour of it's computing center.

I'm saying that for porn, you download the BIG files, 700 MB, not those little movies where you only get 1 or 2 minutes of action

But I was watching a counter-strike movie, don't remember exactly what it was named (deleted it after popups), went to their clan site

Next time you have such a file, you can probably investigate it with VirtualDub (or a clone - one has MPEG support I'm sure) and see what turns up.
