Cant play .avi files?

Please reply to me

I have downloaded several movies in .avi format, but cannot get them to play back once downloaded.

Please can somebody advise why this maybe or point me in the right direction for a good desktop player to view these videos.

Also when burning to CD/DVD in Nero, will .avi files be re-coded to suit?

As you don't give us alot of information my unqualified guess would be that you need the right codec for it to work.

Personally I like VLC Media player and Media Player Classic

I suppose it's possible to do like that (a plugin for Nero) but I would recommend you to use TMPGEnc (or something similar) to recode them to mpg.

Does audio work? Video? What error messages do you get?

What are you currently using?
One possibility is Media Player Classic.

No. The file will be written to the CD as an AVI file.

im primarily using core media player. I have winamp and also WMP10.
None of these seem to play the avi files
I have tried installing codecs but for a start dont really have the knowledge to back it up.

I wondered what most people use to play these files?

Use GSpot. It will give you information on what codec(s) are being used. Google will then tell you where to get the codec(s).

who cares what most ppl use. The answer is probably WMP because it comes with windows and they don't know any better. As sugested above use VLC media player.
It's the DC++ of Media players. I don't think you'll find anyone here that will argue that DC++ isn't the best PTP file sharing prog on the net.
